The Box started in a 5-machine room in Texas where end-of-day counts were done in a spiral notebook. It worked until it didn't: one disputed payout, one audit question, one night where the numbers just didn't add up.

The notebook was the problem. Not because it was paper, but because it had no memory, no audit trail, and no way to export anything when it mattered.
